I found your approach to retirement very dignified -some players never recover leaving football (i.e. Gazza) but I think you showed that, even though it is a great love, it is not the be all and end all.

Chin up Deano. Its been guttin not havin you out there for the Hammers this year but whatever it is you´re up to now the best of luck to ya mate. I´ll always remember the England number 9 that sadly never was, and make sure anyone I know realises what a huge loss you are to my club, West Ham United, and our country. But I spose you can´t keep a good man down eh.

Hi Dean, I´m a big fan from Spain and when I read the news on your retirement I became very sad because I always thought you would finally recover and show the world your skills.

Last month, my friends and I thought it was time to buy some new football shirts for our team. There was a big sale on last red England shirts, so we decided to print our favourite players on them. Some people chose Gerrard, Rooney, Beckham... or even past time heroes such as Sheringham or Le Tissier. My shirt, instead, is paying tribute to one of the best forwards I´ve ever seen, printing on my red England shirt ASHTON #9, like the only time you had the choice to play for the national team. That shirt is my tribute to you, and everytime I wear it I try to play for me but also for you.

Thanks for all, Deano. There´s more to life than scoring goals and I hope you find something you are almost half as good as you were on that.

Deano, totally gutted for ya mate, Ive been a big fan of yours since your Crewe days, and always thought you would be Englands next great striker after Shearer! Youve got a fantastic footballing brain, as well as power and pace, but like one of my other faves Norman Whiteside, have been dealt the cruelest of blows bud! All the best in whatever you decide to do, I genuinely mean that mate! Preecey!

But most of all i hope you enjoy whatever you choose do with your life. I´m sure i speak for every west ham fan when i say you are a living legend. All the Best

Hi Dean, I´m actually a Chelsea fan but I first saw you when you played for Norwich back in 2005. Since then you became one of my favourite football players, even Despite me being a Chelsea fan. I saw that you were a very influencial player and knew you had what it takes for national level. I was ecstatic when you were finally capped and it´s such a shame you had to retire at such an early age and without having done the things you could´ve done in international level :(

I actually wrote you an e-mail a few years ago back when the site was still called Icons.com and received an answer from you :). That really made my day. Wish all the best for you Dean, you´ll always be in our hearts ;)

I know you´re going through a horrible time in your life right now but..."there´s no great loss without some small gain"...who knows?? Something better might be waiting for you ;) Have a good one :D

ive noticed through my life that the good people the true honest people get screwed over in life while the selfish greedy people prosper your a fine example of one of the good people, its difficult to watch one of your fave players go through such a shit time, they say you will be forgotten in the media but i wont be forgetting the talent and energy you showed while playing, it will be remembered in every match i play, and i still have you on fifa 10 :D.
hopefully i´ll meet ya one day in a pub n i´ll get ya a cold one, till then good luck with your future dean, take care mate.

Mr Ashton - I am a fan of non of the clubs you have played for but I am a fan of you. Whenever you played against my team Luton you frightened me to death - I really thought you could go on and play 50 times for England. I have never been on a players site before but just had to say to you how sorry I am that injury has done you. I wish you the very best in your future career whatever it may be. Peter - Luton Fan

Hi Dean, I´m gutted about the news, but wanted to write to personally thank you for the great moments and goals you gave us at Crewe. The best player the club has ever seen. Right from your debut at 16 you were superb. As disappointing as it is, you gave your clubs 9 great years of football and scored the type and number of goals most forwards can only dream of.
It would be great to see you back at the Alex as a striker coach, we really could do with one. All the best Deano.

Hello Dean, I have been a hammers fan for 35 years and in all this time few strikers have performed for us as well as you have.
I am deeply disappointed that you have had to retire as i had been eagerly awaiting your return to both Westham & England.
You would have been going to the world cup had you been fit, increasing our chances of winning.

Just felt moved enough to write this and wish you all the very best. Firstly with your pending operation and secondly with your future. I only hope it is within the context of football.

Good luck & thanks for playing for the hammers!

I am so glad my two young boys got to see you play - to them you are a hero. Your poster will remain in their bedroom for ever. Best wishes for your operation and all that you do in the future.

Last day of season when you were at Norwich and doing lap of honour you gave your boots to a young lad, it´s these kind of actions that your fans will look back on as they underpin the decency, kindness and generosity of dean ashton. I throughly hope to see you back in the game in some capacity, I think you´d make a good replacement for jamie redknapp for example! I hope you are blessed with success and maybe a little bit of luck in whatever you do with the rest of your life. p.s That goal against man city when you were at Norwich was bloody brilliant

Oh man. How terrible is this news? You are an incredible player, and hopefully just as incredible in future employment. This must be horrible for you, and as an 18 year-old lifelong West Ham fan, I have to admit that you gave us the most memorable moments of the past 4 years. Your goal against City, the thunderbolt against Middlesborough, that spectacular out-of-the-blue overhead kick against Man U, and of course you were the star player in the greatest FA Cup Final in the history of the competition.

I´m gonna get Ashton printed on my next West Ham shirt. Thanks for the epic moments. I am lucky to have seen you play in real life. Good luck!

dean...i am so sorry to hear this news today....i am sure you feared it was coming..each day i have prayed for your recovery... a number of years ago a close friend of mine migrated from Ballymena to Crewe and became a huge Alex fan and he told me about this young centre forward who was different not just presence but skill and the ability to involve others and score goals....when you signed for my team Whufc he was obviously jealous and told me i quote "you have just got Englands greatest ever centre forward" hoe true were his words...i am devastated for you not for me and liken you to English footballs greatest ever central defender who was cut short Duncan Edwards...i use these words carefully and not to make you feel bad but i am just honoured to have seen your potential...in life it just sometimes doesn´t happen and i hope you realise your potential in some other way...for now i just dwell on yur goal against city and regret the moment that mad argentine should have hit the stands and not passed to gerard so at least you would have had a cup winners medal and even then you played 25% fit!! thinking about you at this time....vincent

Dean, if you´re reading, I really hope you can manage to stick at it. You´re by far the best striker at what you do, and are miles better than Berbatov. I wish we had you at United. You and Rooney, as well as for England = oh my. Anyway, stay well mate. Don´t quit! With time they can fix anything. If it means waiting another year it´s worth it.

Deano, no dates are available for your comeback but all west ham are still with you while you continue your rehab. Remember that overhead kick at Old Trafford when the Man U fans sang "Youre just a fat Lennox" and we sang back "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This". You did it before and will do it again. Come back soon - we really need you Deano

Dean, us West Ham fans love you, and would give anything to have you back thumping in the goals for us. I, for one, am willing to give you as much time as it takes; weeks, months, years. There´s been so much speculation the last few days and there may or may not be any truth in what the papers are saying. However, we have your back whatever your decision is! I just hope you only retire if it really is necessary, but we trust you to make the right decision- you know best mate! Love, from a Hammers fan.

Things have been goin wrong long enough to know
Everything is right
Been walkin in the dark long enough to know
Finally seen the light
Been losin long enough to know when Ive finally won
And even a blind man can tell when hes walkin in the sun

Ive cried enough tears to know
This feelings called a smile
Been bottom rung long enough to know
When Im doin it in style
Been run long to know
Theres no more need to run
And even a blind man can tell when hes walkin in the sun

Oh, the wind is at my back
And Im sailin on a ship thats overdue
Well Ive blown so many chances
I aint gonna blow this one with you
Ive seen enough bad times to know
Good times have begun
And even a blind man can tell when hes walkin in the sun

Hi Dean i am a West Ham season ticket holder living in Norwich. I followed your progress at Carrow Road and was over the moon when you signed for the hammers.I do not know what problems you are having but i do know that you are a great player. Take as long as it takes until you are right. England and West Ham need you.Good luck for the future whatever you decide.

Deano,
I´m a lifelong hammers fan and I hope to God that you are NOT leaving us. Your an excellent striker all you need is fitness.
Also, if you leave I think that makes you, well insert your own word, west ham have stuck by for however manys years you´ve been off injured... A bit of loyalty in return would be nice! Thanks.
Please stay!!

Dean, how is a move to Stoke going to rekindle your international career. Capello would never watch them and I can hardly think of a player they´ve had in an England squad since Jesus was a boy. Would be a big step down in your career imo. If you have to move for personal reasons find a better team who would suit your style with other England regulars in the team.

Hope I didn´t come across as a right idiot, but my brother-in law lives near you and has acres of land to ride horses etc and as a west ham supporter he´d gladly help you and your family settle down in the area. If ever there was a player that I´m champing at the bit to see his potential blossom into fruition, then Deano you are that man. Some fantastic flashes of brilliance but sadly for you, and us, that´s all they have been, so far. So we may YET, (big word YET) get 5/7 good years from you Dean I hope so - You´re still only a 25 year old so bags of playing time in front of you. A little consistenecy on the park would see our present team transformed from an ok bunch punching above their weight to real contenders. If they could get you back fit in continuity you would be like a new signing for us. This is what you said at the end of last season - "I got five goals in the final eight games of last season. I felt like I ended the season well and that I was getting into my stride. When things are going like that you don’t want the season to end. I felt fit and I felt strong. I feel like I have kept that going. I am looking forward to getting the new season underway so I can pick up where I left off" Wouldn´t it be great to see that kinda form over a whole season?.

--- Get well and playing soon Dean, all the very best from the Claret n Blue Army
